Candlemas:
The art of Remaining Alight

Candlemas, February 2, is the day the crèche is traditionally dismantled and packed up. Jesus leaves the manger and is presented at the Temple: his light is now on display in the world.

The santons also leave (i.e., get packed up). Yet in “The Art of Living in Season,” they continue to accompany us through all the seasons  and pages ahead.
Why is that?

Because we need, perhaps now more than ever, the way they exemplify faithfulness in difficult times. Candlemas opens the season of the bleak mid-winter (whether meteorological or existential), a season when it is often hard to remember or see Jesus, let alone God’s light, in a frozen and bare landscape.
